SPARK! Let’s Move Challenge!

Students are being asked to complete a 25 day physical activity challenge.  Students need to be active for 60 minutes a day for 25 days.  The challenge begins on September 29th and ends October 31st.  Time can be accrued throughout the day (recess, after school, before school, PE).  GES will earn points on the total number of students who complete the challenge and for those students who participate in some activity but are not active for 25 days.   Grand Prize is $25,000 for the SPARK curriculum and training.  Second and Third place schools are awarded $2,500 for physical education equipment.  Let’s get up, get moving, and try to make GES an ACTIVE school! During the 2013-14 School Year, our EAGLES students conducted a project to promote eating fruits and vegetables. They displayed pictures around the school of our school nurse pointing her finger and telling students to eat their fruits and vegetables. Also, during all lunches, students were asked to separate their leftover foods from their paper trash. Click here to see the short video they made:  EAGLES Fruits and Vegetables Video

During Earth Week, two third grade students in Mrs. VanPatten’s class presented information regarding the trash that Americans and South Carolinians generate. Click here to see their video.

GES Students participated in the annual Rethink Contest sponsored by Sonoco Recycling in Columbia. The winners of the contest attended a function at the zoo to celebrate their creativity. Click here to see the winners.

GES is conducting a yearlong recycling fundraiser.

There’s nothing to buy. We are simply asking you to protect the environment by donating your used consumer electronics: cell phones, digital cameras, radar detectors, laptop computers, digital video cameras, electronic book readers. Your used items may be tax deductible and will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations. One hundred percent of the proceeds will help fund Gilbert Elementary.

We also collect clothing and shoes. These are donated to needy families if they are in good condition, or they are recycled if they are of poor quality. We accept donations of all kinds and in all conditions. Items include: clothing, shoes, belts, purses, sheets, linens, etc.  Keeping unnecessary items from the landfill and helping to fund projects for our students is a “WIN-WIN” for everyone! Please place your bags of recycled clothes/shoes in the large box at the “recycling station” located under the front stairwell near the office. There are bins in the same location for electronics and inkjet cartridges. Thank you for helping our recycling efforts!
